Humanity's Edge Comes Home
The story in Punishing: Gray Raven is an epic that's broken up into chapters. It all begins with a human-created infection gone disastrously wrong. This virus, called the Punishing, corrupts society's benign machines, changing them into murderous monsters. It's not only machines, though. The Punishing mutates and zombifies any human affected, as well.
It all begins with a human-created infection gone disastrously wrong.
Humanity flees to a space station called Babylonia. Slowly, they develop their own counter unit to retake their home planet of Earth. Progress through the tale of the Commandment, the leader of that counter unit, known as Gray Raven Special Forces Unit. Unlike the rest of humanity, precariously surviving aboard the Babalyonia, these forces have been altered to combat the machines below.
Now, they're called Constructs. Half-human, half-machine, Gray Raven Special Forces Unit wields dangerous and impressive powers of destruction for the sake of the last of the humans. Launch an all-out assault and find an end to the Punishing, once and for all, while exploring a vast post-apocalyptic wasteland chock-full of unexpected surprises.
Overall, it's an impressive storyline, full of woe, adventure, and everything in between.
Overall, it's an impressive storyline, full of woe, adventure, and everything in between. The story chapters are often blocked by level caps so that you don't get beat up too badly. Meanwhile, that gives a chance to check out other content like bounties or memory rescue. These tasty tidbits add depth to the story's lore, such as giving background on each soldier in the Gray Raven Special Forces Unit with unique quests or random, small completion objectives. It's also where you'll obtain a good chunk of the gacha collectibles in Punishing: Gray Raven.
Stylized Anime Sprites Featuring Splashy Combat & Thumpin Beats
Looking at the game almost immediately inspires NieR: Automata vibes. Sleek, hand-drawn soldiers with flashy armor and big weapons scream classic mech ARPG. Of course, Punishing wouldn't be complete without a gacha component. This deals with collecting these formidable and fantastic-looking characters, along with their weapons and armor, into your arsenal of Constructs. We'll get more to that in a bit, though.
The combat and art are flashy and furiously fantastic.
The combat itself is beautiful, like helping out in a violent ballet. Everything on the screen has a meaning, from your dodge counter (the tiny white circle around your movement button) to the colors of your abilities-- known as orbs. Generally speaking, blue orbs buff your team, yellow orbs are AOE-style attacks, and red are single-target attacks. Chaining orbs together on-screen during combat creates a matrix, allowing for a variety of super-powerful attacks. Overall, it's the perfect blend of engaging combat using meaningful visual cues.
The music fits in well, harnessing the sci-fi post-apocalyptic vibes of the story with deep industrial techno roots. The pulsating beat always underlines the mood, from frantic combat situations to tense story dialogues fraught with emotion. Basically, expect plenty of fast-paced, classic RPG instrumentals as well as the hard-hitting grungy mech-tech during your exploration and grinding in Punishing.
Gacha, But That's Not All!
Opening Punishing on mobile offers endless ways for even a newbie to play. Check out the story mode and take on tough enemies, building teams via the Constructs you recruit into The Gray Raven Special Forces Unit. Start out with a small group, but build your forces by completing these and other mission types like Event, Challenge War, and Resources. Each one offers special currency rewards, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the world of Punishing.
Each mission offers special currency rewards, as well as the opportunity to learn more about the world of Punishing.
Through all of these various mission types, however, you will equip a banner. These banners are critical to the gacha unlocks that we discussed earlier. However, that's not all the banners do. Banners all come complete with a "pity hit", which is a guaranteed hit after XX amount of misses. Equipping your party with banners is critical to maintaining a decent hit rate in combat.
As for getting the banners themselves, you simply head over to your R&D Section. Spending a particular currency, known as Construct research tickets, earns you different banners. It also unlocks character shards. These character shards are based on which Construct research ticket you spend to unlock banners. Collecting 50 shards of most characters allows you to then unlock them, and bring them to your team. It's a little confusing, but the grind is smooth and mostly facilitates itself. If you're ever feeling like bulking up your resources, head on over to that area and grind to your heart's content!
